Let's Light This Candle
“I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it’s been.” - Wayne Gretzky
”I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” - Thomas Edison
”The man who moves a mountain was the one who began by carrying away small stones.” - Confucius
Let’s get started moving those stones. What are you going to do this year to make it better than last? New services, new employees, better employees, get new customers, keep old customers, better training, what’s on your list?
Where do you
want to be a year from now?
If you haven’t thought that far out, you should. If your goals are still in your head, now is a great time to write them down. Share your goals with someone who will hold you accountable for achieving them, maybe another operator or spouse.
Update your business plan.
You do have a business plan, right? If not, check out “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Business Plans by Gwen Moran. Your marketing/advertising plan should also already be done. Plan what you will do for the rest of the year. Ask your vendors to help. Ask other operators what has worked for them. Get your team involved in planning. It pays to tap into the creativity of your employees. You never know where the next great idea will come from.
It’s a new year, get a fresh start. Go through the piles of papers on your desk and your in-box. Do what’s needed, delegate, trash or file them.
Review your menu of services.
Analyze the time, talking and training your services take versus the profits they deliver. Trash the lowest performers and look for new ones.
Donate old stuff.
A local charity might appreciate them.
Listen to your phone greetings.
It’s easy to set and forget your message, but customers hear them every day. Make sure the best and most accurate message is being shared.
Don’t forget your computer.
Back it up. If you don’t regularly back up your computer, now’s the time to do so. This is also a good time to clear out your e-mail in-box, reorganize and streamline your e-mail folders, and clean up your computer desktop. Also check your website for outdated content. Refresh, remove items and/or add something more current.
Restock your bookshelves with books that will help achieve your 2014 goals. Schedule the trade shows and training events you want you and your people to attend.
Get rid of your annoyances.
Annoyances are those little things that bug you every day and drain your energy. Make a list of all the annoyances that are getting on your nerves and get rid of or fix them.
I’m here to help, call me me if you need a sounding board.
I need someone to help me procrastinate on my stuff. By the way, what movie made the title famous? Oh that reminds me, I owe prizes to the winners of my last quiz. Darn, my list just keeps getting longer. Good luck!
