GM Extends Free Oil Changes
It’s all over the news about General Motors offering free oil changes, tire rotations and inspections for two years on most of its 2014 models. GM says it is to boost customer loyalty. The offer is good for two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. GM has been doing this for Cadillacs since the 2011 model year.
Oil changes will only be done when the vehicle’s oil monitoring system comes on. We all know that with the high mileage these monitors are set at that the vehicle may be very lucky to get two oil changes in two years — it also means that tire pressure and fluids are probably only checked about once a year as well.
I have been in the fast lube business for more than 25 years. I do not want people in our business to start running around saying, “The sky is falling!” It’s not even close.
There are tens of millions of vehicles on the road today. There are new profit centers on these older vehicles such as TPMS, brakes, shocks, headlight lens restoration, tire rotations and many more.
Let’s look at this another way — if General Motors manufactures 1.5 million vehicles in 2014 all their dealerships cannot handle nor do they want to try to handle this load. Remember, dealerships dislike this type of work. Their employees do not like doing this work because they are generally getting time/material.
So keep your chin up. As a GM employee told me, most of this stuff does not come from their engineering department, but from their marketing department.
