Associationally Speaking (AOCA) - March 2010

Forget Phil, A Warming Trend Is on the Way

By David Saddler

Keeping in mind that this column is penned in early February for the March issue of National Oil & Lube News, I am sitting in chilly — yes, 30° F-chilly — Dallas, reading an article about how Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow yet again, solidifying the prospect of six more weeks of winter. Phil, of course, is the famous groundhog who is purported to predict a longer winter or an early arriving spring, based upon seeing or not seeing his shadow in a small, frigid western Pennsylvania town, the name of which is that really long word that begins with P.

Using winter as a metaphor for the economy and the long, cold economic winter we have seen since late ’08, I say “Enough!” Sorry, Phil; it is time for warm weather, spring and growth.

Unlike Phil, whose forecasting skills are surrounded by mystery and tradition, my prediction is based in part on recent, improving economic data, flat-out optimism and, most importantly, tools and techniques that are time-tested and proven. I am not the only one who has said it, but I will repeat it: While challenging economic times are painful, they also reveal not only a business’s weaknesses, but also strengths on which you can capitalize. So this is an opportune time to emphasize the value of the Automotive Oil Change Association (AOCA) for companies in the fast lube business (this is the “tried-and-true” part).

As a fast lube operator, you face a daunting set of challenges:

Improving operations — The poor economy has forced businesses to improve operations, reduce costs and maximize revenues. This is a continuing process that has been forced upon you, but one that should help you emerge ready for growth.

Maximizing your greatest asset — While it often feels like the fast lube business is about lubricants, machines and compliance, it is really a people and service business. That makes your employees your greatest asset. Are they trained? Are they experts? Are they your greatest advocates for return and referred business?

Identifying new ideas and new services — There are many profit centers available to fast-lube businesses, and more on the way. Can you identify them? Do you know how to launch them? Do you know how to present them to your customers?

Creating opportunities, avoiding pitfalls, and taking advantage of emerging trends
— The fast lube business is impacted and affected by a wide range of issues. Some of them, like the advent of the use of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) in the United States, could be good for your bottom line. Others, like GM’s dexos I oil, could be a thorn in your side. Then, there are issues like state and provincial laws and regulations; federal laws and regulations; and compliance with environmental and safety rules. How do you stay current with it all? The core of AOCA’s products and services for members, and the industry at large, are directly aimed at providing information and solutions in each of these areas.

The International Fast Lube Expo (iFLEX), presented by AOCA
— This is the only event dedicated to the fast lube industry. Meet vendors who can introduce you to new products. Attend educational sessions to identify trends and opportunities. Meet your peers, and remember that you are not alone. You are part of one industry. Learn from each other!

Technical and business information and tools — AOCA committees produce information for members. AOCA members network “virtually” with each other on AOCA Talk, our members-only list-serve. Our web resources and various publications, discounted business programs, templates, guides and videos provide the information and tools that fast lube professionals need.

Training and education
— In addition to the educational opportunities at iFLEX, AOCA offers two core programs. The Manager Certification Course is among our most popular benefits, while the AOCA Online Technician Academy provides a convenient method to train new hires and is a great refresher for employees. And our Education Committee is studying the next generation of learning. Let AOCA be your training department.

Advocacy — AOCA is the one voice for the industry. Whether through efforts relating to federal legislation or regulations, as well as those at the state and provincial level; influence on fire and building codes, environmental and safety compliance; or efforts to promote the industry and members to the driving public, AOCA is the strongest and best positioned advocate for your business.

When you combine your AOCA resources with an authoritative industry publication like NOLN — which, by the way, is the official publication of iFLEX — you have powerful tools at your disposal. We’re both here for you. Forget about Punxsutawney Phil. It’s time to warm up to AOCA and its great value for you, your company and your team.
