Staying current on the types of motor oil to recommend to your customers has always been important. As the industry continues to evolve, and manufacturers play a greater role in deciding the type of motor oil they prefer their engines to run, it’s important to know which OEMs are recommending which synthetic products so technicians do not erroneously void a vehicle’s warranty. From a car manufacturer’s perspective, there is a big difference between synthetic oils that have been tested and approved to meet their specifications and those that claim to meet a specification without validation from the OEM. Those who pay attention to the trends may find themselves rewarded with more business and higher-margin business as they validate to the consumer their credibility, knowledge and expertise. Those who go with more of a one-oil-fits-all strategy may learn that, over time, that’s not much of a strategy at all.
