Chrysler Minivans May Need Revised Oil Filter Adaptor

By Jeff Webster

You or a customer who drives a Chrysler minivan may notice oil wicking from the oil filter gasket or the oil cooler gasket. Inspect the oil filter or oil cooler gasket for scratches or cuts. If any damage exists, perform the repair procedure described in this tech tip.

Affected Vehicles:
2001 - 2003 Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager with a 3.3L or 3.8L V6 engine

Parts Required:
• 04781163AC – Adaptor, Oil Filter (qty. 1)
• 04781166AC – Gasket, Oil Filter Adaptor (qty. 1)
• 05093807AA – Gasket, Oil Filter Adaptor (as required)

Repair Procedure
1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove oil filter. (Caution: When servicing the oil filter avoid deforming the filter can by installing the remove/install tool band strap against the can-to-base lock seam. The lock seam joining the can to the base is reinforced by the base plate.) Using a suitable oil filter wrench, turn the filter counterclockwise to remove it from the oil filter adapter (Figure 1). Properly discard used oil filter.
3. Remove oil cooler attachment fitting and oil cooler if equipped.
4. Disconnect oil pressure switch electrical connector.
5. Remove oil filter adaptor attaching bolts.
6. Remove oil filter adaptor and seal.
7. Install revised oil filter adaptor, P/M 04781163AC, and gasket, P/N 04781166M. Tighten attaching bolts to 250 in. lbs. (28 Nm).
8. Connect oil pressure switch electrical connector.
9. Install oil cooler with new gasket, P/N 05093807M. Tighten oil cooler fitting to 240 in. lbs. (27 Nm).
10. Lower vehicle on hoist.
11. Fill oil to proper level.
12. Start engine and inspect for leaks.
