Servicing the C-Class
C-Class models, like most Mercedes vehicles, come with the Mercedes-Benz Maintenance System, a computer-based program that tracks distance driven and time elapsed since the last service and notifies drivers approximately one month before the next service is due. The message provides the remaining miles or days until the next service.

Mercedes-Benz does not differentiate between “normal” and “severe operating conditions” except in the following categories:
• Interior filters — The company notes that in dusty conditions, or when the climate control is frequently operated in the air recirculation mode, the dust, combination or recirculating air filter (i.e. cabin air filter) should be “changed more frequently” than called for by the Maintenance System.
• Spark plugs — In “severe operating conditions,” what Mercedes deems “frequent starting and stopping, excessive idling and sustained fast highway driving,” the company notes that spark plugs may need to be replaced sooner than normal.
• Coolant — The company notes that coolant may need to be serviced more frequently if it is not maintained according to instructions or if unapproved products are used.

Under all other conditions, the company calls for the following service intervals:

Every 5,000 miles:
• Rotate tires.

Every 10,000 miles or one year:
• Change engine oil and filter.
• Replace wiper blades.
• Inspect brake pads and tire inflation pressures. Check brake system components, including lines, hoses and calipers.
• Inspect coolant level, brake fluid, power steering fluid and windshield washer fluid, and top off, if necessary.
• Inspect hood hinges, horn, all exterior lights, trunk lights and battery.

Every 20,000 miles or two years:
• Check condition of poly-V-belt.
• Replace brake fluid.
• Replace combination or dust filter (i.e. cabin air filter).
• Inspect front axle ball joints and rubber boots.
• Inspect condition of steering mechanical components and rubber boots.
• Check parking brake.
• Check headlamp setting.
• Lubricate moonroof.

Every 40,000 miles or four years:
• Replace automatic transmission fluid and filter.
• Replace engine air filter.

Every 60,000 miles or six years:
• Inspect driveshaft flexible discs.

Every 80,000 miles or eight years:
• Replace spark plugs.

Every 150,000 miles or 15 years:
• Replace fuel filter.
• Replace coolant.

Fluids and Capacities
Motor oil — Mercedes recommends SAE 0W-40, 5W-40 or 5W-30 motor oil meeting MB spec 229.5 (which generally means a full synthetic motor oil) for all temperature ranges. Alternately, 0W-30 or 5W-30 motor oil meeting 229.5 may be used if temperatures do not exceed 86° F (30° C), and 10W-40, 10W-50 and 10W-30 motor oil meeting 229.5 may be used if temperatures do not fall below minus-4° F (minus-20° C). Capacity for rear-wheel-drive models is 8.5 quarts (8.0 liters); capacity for 4Matic all-wheel-drive models is 7.4 quarts (7.0 liters).

Automatic transmission fluid — MB ATF or equivalent. Capacity is 9.5 quarts (9.0 liters) for rear-wheel-drive models and 10.5 quarts (9.9 liters) for all-wheel-drive models.

Manual transmission fluid — MB Manual Transmission Oil or equivalent. Capacity is 1.6 quarts (1.5 liters).

Rear axle fluid — Hypoid gear oil SAE 85W-90. Capacity is 1.2 quarts (1.1 liters).

Front axle fluid (all-wheel-drive models only) — Hypoid gear oil SAE 85W-90. Capacity is 1.2 quarts (1.1 liters).

Power steering fluid — MP Power Steering Fluid (ChevronTexaco PSF 9109) or equivalent. Capacity is approximately 0.9 quarts (0.8 liters).

Brake fluid — DOT 4+. Capacity is 0.53 quarts (0.5 liters).

Coolant — MB 325.0 Anticorrosion/Antifreeze or equivalent. Capacity is approximately 5.1 quarts (4.8 liters).
