As with anything, operators may run into problems replacing wiper blades from time to time, and there are some things to watch out for.

“On some of the older vehicles, if the clip is rusted or if there is rust on the arm, sometimes we need to work (the blade) in with penetrating oil. Overall, though, unless it’s an older vehicle, we don’t experience many problems with them,” Mikrut said.

Another issue operators might run into is having the right connectors to fit vehicles. “They have to buy from the right manufacturer to make sure they have the right clips,” said Marc Cutler, division president at TVI Filtration.

Another expert agrees. “With so many different arm applications nowadays, it can be difficult to find a wiper program that can fit all of the necessary arms,” said Anthony Leardi, of Wexco Industries. “Some of the programs that offer coverage on new OEM wiper applications do so with numerous SKUs per blade size. For instance, two separate 22-inch wipers may be necessary.”

However, operators need not worry, as many manufacturers offer all the necessary connectors needed for each OEM application in every wiper package.

Offering wiper blade replacement provides a few great benefits to your customers. There is, of course, one obvious benefit. “They will be able to see better,” Cutler said.

But there’s more. “It’s just another service to help make it one-stop shopping,” Mikrut said. “Probably half of our wiper blade sales come from customers asking versus us presenting it to them. So, it is another time to offer to have something taken care of on their vehicle while they’re here.”

And even more. “What’s a better benefit than peace of mind,” Leardi said. “Nobody likes to get nervous when looking at rain clouds. With a fresh pair of wipers, drivers can say, ‘bring it on!’”
