An explosion and fire has destroyed a north Minneapolis automotive service building.

The fire was reported about 10:30 a.m. at Fremont Automotive Service, 4053 Fremont Ave. N. The roof of the building has since collapsed.

The fire started when the owner of the service was working on a car and it exploded. He was able to escape and was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center as a precaution.

He was not injured.

The firefighters fought the fire from above because they were concerned about additional explosions; several 50-gallon barrels of gas were inside the building.

Fire officials said they will be on the scene while they wait for the gas to burn off.

Firefighters are also working to protect a home south of the building.
