A Zumba instructor has been arrested in connection to the theft of nearly $32,000 from a local auto lube shop where she previously worked as a bookkeeper, police said.

Tatyanna Asia, 35, of McAllen, Texas, was arrested in February after the owners of National Lube Express, a family-owned business with locations across the Rio Grande Valley, discovered thousands of dollars missing from their bank account last year.

Frank Gonzalez, co-owner of the auto shop, said Asia had worked with his company for more than three years as the assistant bookkeeper and took over as lead accountant late last year.

According to a criminal complaint, Asia was depositing company checks to her personal bank account and paying her bills with the company’s account. After noticing discrepancies in their bookkeeping, Gonzalez said Asia had taken a total of $31,739 without the company’s permission.

Asia was arrested in November 2014 and was indicted in February for theft of $20,000 to $100,000, a third-degree felony. She pleaded not guilty in March and is scheduled to appear at the 398th state District Court on May 28.
