Oct. 9, 2019—A gas station in Takoma Park, Md. is the first in the U.S. to completely transition from a petroleum gas station to 100 percent exclusively charging electric vehicles, reports CNBC.
RS Automotives owner, Depeswar Doley, was unhappy with the way oil and gasoline companies structure contracts and decided to go 100 percent to EV charging.
With more than 20,700 registered EVs in Maryland, the switch was much needed to keep up with the demand. Matthew Wade, EVI CEO, said the area has had issues with the supply of charging stations not meeting the demand of EVs—the town only had two charges before Doley made the switch.
“They were fully utilized throughout the day; people were lining up,” Wade said. “The city was happy they were being used, but then they said, ‘Wait, no one can get in this parking lot, because these taxis are using these chargers.’”
The station will feature four dispensers that connect to a high-powered 200kW system. The system will allow four vehicles to charge at the same time and will reach 80 percent battery in 20 to 30 minutes.
