Jan. 13, 2021—The American Petroleum Institute announced plans for an aftermarket audit, which hopes to test 1,300 packaged and bulk oil samples worldwide.
The goal is to verify compliance with engine oil specifications and labeling for ILSAC and API standards.
“API is making API SP and ILSAC GF-6A and GF-6B engine oils a focus for testing in 2021 to be certain that they are compliant with the rigorous specifications required for use in today’s gasoline engines,” said Jeffrey Harmening, manager, EOLCS with the American Petroleum Institute, in a press release. “In addition, API plans to develop an annual summary report detailing AMAP (Aftermarket Audit Program) program’s results.”
The API testing program has reviewed more than 8,600 oil samples since 2014 to confirm that they meet the marketed standards. If a licensed oil doesn't meet the required specs, the press release says that API works with the oil manufacturer or licensee to find the root cause and correct he problem.
