Cold Weather Forces Shutdowns

General Motors, Ford, Nissan and Toyota all stopped production at several or all of its U.S. manufacturing facilities.

Feb. 16, 2021—Manufacturers across the country shut down Monday, with some extending their closures into next week as a severe winter storm delivers arctic temperatures, snow and ice accumulation across the country, the Detroit Free Press reported.

General Motors, Nissan and Toyota all stopped production at several or all of its U.S. manufacturing facilities on Monday. Nissan is expected to resume production Tuesday.

Ford also opted to shutter production at a Missouri plant, but its shutdown will last through Sunday, with production resuming Monday.

"Due to unseasonably cold temperatures in the midsection of the United States, Ford was warned that the availability of natural gas could be restricted in the Kansas City area in the coming days," Kelli Felker, global manufacturing and labor communications manager, told the publication. "To ensure we minimize our use of natural gas that is critical to heat people’s homes, we have decided to cancel operations," she said.
