Police Department Offers Insight on Catalytic Converter Thefts

Sept. 2, 2022

Police in Carrollton, Texas, say that Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Tundra models are at a greater risk for catalytic converter theft.

Sept. 1, 2022—Police in Carrollton, Texas, are educating community members on catalytic converter theft, including which vehicles seem to be more at risk than others.

According to 5 NBC DFW, despite statewide laws that ensure recyclers are checking for proof of ownership, thieves are still making money off stolen catalytic converters. Carrollton Police Detective Michael Wall told 5 NBC DFW that the department recently seized stolen catalytic converters that were going to be shipped out of state to New York.

Some thieves are even able to saw through safeguards that drivers are voluntarily implementing such as rebar and chains.

Carrollton Police have noticed that Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Tundra models are more at risk for theft because they sit higher off the ground. Additionally, Tundra models have two converters.

Wall said that more drivers are installing skid plates as a deterrent because the large metal piece makes the catalytic converter difficult to access.
