ASA Participates in Vehicle Safety Inspection Study Presentation

Sept. 19, 2022

The Carnegie Mellon vehicle safety inspection study was presented by CITA North America Regional Advisory Group in Washington D.C.

Sept. 19, 2022—The Automotive Service Association recently participated in a vehicle safety inspection briefing hosted by CITA North America Regional Advisory Group in Washington D.C.

According to a press release, the briefing on Capitol Hill featured a presentation of a new vehicle safety inspection study from Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Scott Matthews presented the findings of this 2020 study titled “Safety I/M programs mitigate motorway fatalities: A study of the U.S. FARS dataset, 1975—2018." The study was funded in part by CITA.

ASA is a board member of the CITA North America Regional Advisory Group. As an international organization, CITA has a goal of improving road safety and the environment. This is done through vehicle safety inspection and emissions testing programs.

The 2020 study presented at this recent briefing evaluated 15 states across the country that require periodic passenger vehicle safety inspections. The results showed that there are 5.5% fewer roadway fatalities in the sate that have I/M programs. This means that around 1,400 fatalities were avoided in 2018 as a result of these inspection programs.

ASA Mechanical Ops Committee Director John Firm shared his remarks at the briefing virtually. Firm Automotive is in Fort Worth, Texas. Texas is a state that requires these periodic inspection checks. He shared with the attendees that these programs are indeed important, as even the seemingly simplest checks on a vehicle can help keep a driver safe.
