May 24, 2022

Solstice 456A can be used to replace R134a in air conditioning systems and has been shown to match its performance in trials.

May 24, 2022—Honeywell has announced Solstice 456A, a drop-in replacement for use in air conditioning systems.

According to Cooling Post, 456A is a low GWP replacement for R134a. Honeywell has not released the chemical components involved, however they have shared that it is "HFO-based."

Honeywell has stated that Solstice 456A “provides an easy-to-use, economical, drop-in service solution for vehicles manufactured before 2017”, according to Cooling Post.

The assumption is that the gas is R456A. This is a refrigerant blend that was announced for use by Koura, who developed it. Koura is a competitor of Honeywell.

R456A has a GWP of 626 and has shown to match the performance of R134a in automotive air conditioning systems.

Honeywell currently holds patents on R1234yf, which is a refrigerant for use in new vehicles.
