Members of the Kempsville Christian Church said they were going to help military families and they did.

"I'm just grateful that there's a group out there who's willing to do this kind of thing," Melissa said, whose husband is on deployment.

A little more than a week ago, members of the church contacted 13News Now saying they wanted to help out spouses and families whose loved ones are away on deployment. They decided to perform free oil changes and checkups for the families’ cars in the church parking lot.

"It's about trying to take care of people," said church member, Don Lauzon. "To just really be able to lift them up has just been a blessing."

Melissa agrees.

"I do know ladies out there who do know how to take care of their own cars," she said. "I'm not one of them."

Volunteers from Century Concrete and O'Reilly Auto Parts helped with this effort.
