A mechanic who was working on a car at an auto repair shop was hurt critically Sunday after a car hit him.

Police said it happened just before 1 p.m. at the Firestone Complete Auto Care Center in the Hidenwood Shopping Center off Warwick Boulevard.

An 81–year-old woman was in her car and accidently hit the accelerator, driving into a service bay where the car struck a mechanic who was working on a vehicle on a lift.

The woman's car also hit the vehicle on the lift, but it was not knocked off the lift.

The driver was not hurt.

A spokesman for the Newport News Police Department wasn't sure if the driver was a customer at the business. He said that police did not expect to file charges because the incident was an accident that happened on private property.
