The first 2015 Chevrolet COPO Camaro race car will be auctioned for charity. Built for NHRA Stock Eliminator drag racing, 100 percent of the winning bid will go to the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans. The non-profit organization helps disabled athletes and veterans train and participate in marathons.

“This sale gives the highest bidder the opportunity to buy the first of only 69 factory-assembled 2015 COPO Camaro race cars, the final year of the fifth-generation Camaro,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports, in a release. “Chevrolet is excited to offer this milestone Camaro to help a very worthy organization.”

First shown at the 2014 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the first 2015 Chevrolet COPO Camaro is finished in Abalone White paint with matte gray and orange accents, and no. 15 graphics. This is the same cars used in Chevrolet Performance ads and other GM marketing pieces.

Based on a production body-in-white, the hand-built drag car is powered by a 350-cubic-inch LSX-based race engine NHRA-rated at 555 hp due in part to a 2.9-liter Whipple twin-screw supercharger. A three-speed automatic racing transmission sends power to the solid rear axle, which replaces the street car’s independent rear end. Chevrolet Performance claims the drivetrain combination is good for mid-eight-second quarter-mile times.

Additional race bits include an NHRA-approved roll cage and safety equipment as well as chassis and suspension upgrades.

The first 2015 Chevrolet COPO Camaro will go up for sale at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach auction on April 18. Last year, the first 2014 Chevrolet COPO Camaro raised $700,000 for the same charity.
