Two former automotive repair shops next to Amato’s Sandwich Shop in Biddeford, Maine were razed recently to make space for a proposed combination Taco Bell and Jiffy Lube.
Kyle Gibson, a representative for Chicago- and New York-baseddevelopment company Guggenheim Partners LLC, which is overseeing the project, presented a conceptual site plan to the city’s Planning Board in early December.
The board granted approval of the project on March 16, allowing the firm to develop a 2,079-squarefoot Taco Bell restaurant with drive-through capability and an adjoining 4,995- square-foot Jiffy Lube car maintenance shop on the nearly two-acre site.
On Thursday, demolition crews could be seen using machinery to lift debris off the ground before trucking it away just after 10 a.m.
It was not immediately clear when the $506,332 project would be completed. Requests for comment to the developer’s media relations department were not returned on Thursday.
In December, Gibson said the unusual combination of businesses works to manage traffic flow, with Jiffy Lube seeing less traffic per hour than the adjoining fast-food restaurant.
