TechSpec: 2016 Nissan Titan XD

Oct. 31, 2016
The 2016 Nissan Titan XD was introduced to shake up the competitive full-size pickup segment. Nissan took a unique position between traditional heavy-duty and light-duty entries. Called the XD, the Titan offers some of the effortless towing and hauling of the larger, more expensive heavy-duty trucks — including an available maximum towing capacity of 12,314 pounds (diesel engine) and maximum payload capacity of 2,594 pounds (gas engine) when properly equipped — yet has fuel efficiency and affordability closer to a half-ton pickup. The XD is the first of a new family of Nissan Titan full-size pickups.

The new Titan XD Crew Cab, with its standard 5.6L Endurance V8 engine and available Cummins 5.0L V8 turbo diesel, is the first of three cab configurations, two frame sizes, three powertrain offering and five grade levels to be available in the full Titan lineup.

Nissan Titan XD models are built on a unique frame and chassis to handle the Cummins diesel and Endurance V8 gas engines. Starting with a durable, proven chassis design from Nissan Commercial Vehicles, the new fully boxed, full-length ladder frame is extensively reinforced and strengthened for use with the Titan XD with added stiffness, vertical and lateral bending and torsional rigidity. It also features an extended 151.6-inch wheelbase — about 20 inches longer than non-XD Titan models.

To maximize stability, handling and ride comfort, Titan XD uses a new heavy-duty highly stable suspension design. The double-wishbone with stabilizer bar front suspension is reinforced and tuned for hard use, and the rigid rear axle suspension utilizes hefty leaf springs and leaf bushings, along with twin-tube shock absorbers. The rear differential measures 9.84 inches with 3.5-inch axle tubes, while the front differential (four-wheel-drive models) measures 9.25 inches. Also available is an electronic locking rear differential.

The new Titan XD rides on 17-inch, 18-inch or 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with LT245/75R17, LT275/65R18 or LT265/60R20 tires. Braking is provided by a four-wheel disc system with 14.2- by 1.5-inch front and 14.4- by 1.2-inch rear ventilated discs front and rear with hydraulic power assist.

The radiator’s heat radiation cooling capacity has been increased more than 25 percent — versus the previous Titan — to help enhance performance and meet SAE J2807 compliance.

The Titan XD’s Cummins diesel is the first commercial application of the new Cummins M2 two-stage turbo system, which helps reduce traditional turbo-lag through precision balancing between high-pressure and low-pressure turbos. The patented Rotary Turbine Control provides solid performance across the powerband and manages exhaust gas temperatures.

The new engine also features a Bosch HPCR fuel system to deliver precise fuel control and multiple injections per combustion stroke, which helps increase efficiency and reduce traditional diesel clatter. It is also equipped with advanced, maintenance-free Bosch ceramic glow plugs.

The new Cummins 5.0L V8 turbo diesel exhaust system has a particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction that enable the engine to run cleaner. That technology also serves a second purpose — reducing typical diesel noise. The engine is also expected to provide a projected 20-percent better fuel economy than a gasoline-powered V8 while towing full loads.

The other available engine in the pickup truck is the new 5.6L Endurance V8, featuring four valves per cylinder, variable valve event and lift and direct injection. It is rated at 390 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 401 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The new gasoline engine also features direct injection gas (DIG) technology, which provides better wide-open throttle performance and improved fuel economy and emissions performance. An 11.2:1 compression ratio is provided by a new piston design, aiding overall engine efficiency and performance, and a multi control valve assists in managing the engine’s thermal efficiency better than a traditional thermostat.

Nissan Titan four-wheel-drive models feature a new transfer case, designed to ensure maximum power distribution in every gear. It distributes torque to both ends and provides four-wheel drive when added traction is needed.

The 2016 Nissan Titan XD is available in five trim levels: S, SV, Pro-4X, SL and Platinum Reserve. All are offered with a choice of two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive configurations, except for the Pro-4X model, which is available exclusively as a four-wheel drive.

A 2016 Titan XD carries a starting MSRP of $35,290, while a top-of-the line Titan XD Crew Cab Platinum Reserve has a starting MSRP of $60,520.

DIESEL MAINTENANCE UNDER SEVERE OPERATING CONDITIONS

If vehicle is mainly operated under any of the severe driving conditions, follow the subsequent maintenance schedule. Severe driving conditions include:

• Repeated short trips of less than 5 miles (8 km)

• Repeated short trips of less than 10 miles (16 km) with outside temperatures remaining below freezing

Pickups equipped with a diesel engine are also equipped with an oil change monitor. It calculates engine oil and filter change intervals based on driving conditions. Driving in severe conditions will shorten the engine oil and filter change interval. When the “Engine Oil – Service Due Now” warning appears in the vehicle information display, the engine oil and filter need to be replaced.
