If you need evidence that we are living in the future, consider this: Your next Ford Super Duty will be able to see better around corners than you will.

The company announced at its Further With Ford Silicon Valley conference that the next-generation F-Series Super Duty will be available with up to seven exterior cameras. A new, sophisticated split-view camera system is key in the company’s camera strategy for its vehicles, which incorporates a front-mounted wide-angle lens that monitors obstacles around corners that may be out of the driver’s line of sight.

Such technology could prevent low-speed collisions with other vehicles and pedestrians by alerting the driver to obstacles via the infotainment screen. These kinds of collisions happen most frequently at junctions; as such, the camera system automatically shuts off at 6 mph to prevent driver distraction at higher speeds.

The split-view camera is already available on the 2015 Ford Edge and 2016 Ford Explorer, and it will be available on the new Super Duty anticipated for the 2017 model year. In the meantime, Ford devotees can option their F-150s with up to five cameras, including a reversing camera, two cameras mounted on the sideview mirrors, and a forward camera. Additionally, a forward-looking camera in the rearview mirror helps activate automatic high beams and manage lane-keeping assist. The whole kit and caboodle also assists with reversing a trailer when ordered in conjunction with Pro Trailer Backup Assist.

Ford says that a rearview camera will come standard in all of its North American passenger vehicles by 2018. Forward cameras will be available across the board by 2020. Whimsically, other announcements from Further With Ford included available 3D printing templates for models of some of the company's other models, including the Raptor.
