Special Editions of the Ford Mustang are always a treat to behold, but the 2016 Ford Mustang “Apollo Edition,” which has entered the public atmosphere for the first time today, is more than just a hopped up pony car. This very special ‘Stang was purpose-built for the annual Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture event, to be held from July 20–26, 2015, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, during which it will be auctioned at the Gathering of Eagles charity event on July 23. Proceeds will benefit the EAA’s youth education programs, including the Young Eagles.
The Mustang Apollo Edition itself is pretty awesome. Rendered in gloss white with a black hood and roof, with custom Forgiato 21-inch black and white wheels stuffed into the wells, the Apollo Edition presents a uniquely NASA-esque visage. Other cool bits include red mirrors, USA and American flag graphics evocative of NASA rockets, and wicked aero addenda front, side and rear. Inside, the car has modified gauges, a deleted rear-seat, and custom embroidery. Our favorite visual detail, however, is its LED underbody spotlighting that Ford says symbolizes atmospheric re-entry.
Backing up the rocket-like looks is rocket-like power, with a Ford Performance supercharger boosting output to a whopping 627 hp and 540 lb-ft of torque. Other upgrades include an “X-pipe” side and rear exhaust system, Brembo brakes, and a sport-tuned suspension.
Ford has supported the EAA for 15 years, and 2015 represents the eighth consecutive year that Ford has donated an aerospace-themed, one-off Mustang for auction. Proceeds from the donated vehicles have totaled nearly $3 million to date. So if you’re looking for a unique muscle car with a feel-good story to go along with its look-good story, better head up to Wisconsin next week. And bring your checkbook.
