July 29, 2021—Ford Motor Co. announced Tuesday it will build its $100 million Ion Park battery research center in Romulus, Mich.

The facility is part of a larger $185 million investment that Ford will put into "developing, testing and building vehicle battery cells and cell arrays," according to a report from the Detroit Free Press. That investment comes on the heels of a planned $35 billion investment in electrification by 2025.

The company expects the 270,000-square-foot facility to employ 200 full-time engineers once renovations are complete.

“The new lab will help Ford speed up the battery development process to deliver even more capable, affordable batteries and is part of Ford’s renewed commitment to making Michigan a centerpiece of its focus on EVs," Ion Park Director Anand Sankaran said.
