Feb. 3, 2022—Though total new vehicle sales in the U.S. grew less than 4 percent this past year, EVs continued to make significant strides forward.
According to a report from Cox Automotive, 147,799 battery electric vehicles were sold in the fourth quarter in the U.S., a record for pure EVs. Twenty-five fully electric models registered at least one sale in that time period.
Per the report, EVs accounted for 9.7 percent of all new vehicle sales last year. In just the fourth quarter, they accounted for 11.8 percent. Tesla is still standing strong as the top EV manufacturer in the country, accounting for 72 percent of EV sales.
Hybrids also saw a significant increase in national sales, almost hitting the 1-million-unit mark. More than half of those sold were either a Toyota or a Lexus.
