Feds Unveil Stricter Efficiency Standards

April 5, 2022

The rollercoaster CAFE standards are now getting tighter.

April 5, 2022—The federal government announced a plan for vehicles to get 49 mpg by 2026.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced the revised CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) standards in a press conference, saying that the rule could prevent 5.5 trillion pounds of carbon dioxide from going into the atmosphere by 2050, as reported by The Verge.

The new standards increase efficiency by 8 percent from 2024 to 2025 and then by 10 percent annually for 2026. CAFE standards were first set by President Barack Obama and then eased a bit under President Donald Trump.
