May 9, 2022—Samir and Ghada Sharabatee are facing some backlash from a local homeowners association over their planned Hinsdale Discount Tires and Automotive shop in Hinsdale, Illinois.

According to Patch, JMS Auto Service was previously located on the proposed site, but that business closed in 2019.

Hinsdale's Plan Commission recommended a permit for the Sharabatee's proposed business in February. This included the requirements of limited parking, limiting dumpsters to a fenced-in enclosure, painting the building's trim and adding greenery.

"The landlord is on board with some of these changes," said Wade Joyner, lawyer for the Sharabatees. "The green trim doesn't look the best. It probably never has, unless it was painted in the '60s. So we're going to replace it with a bright, glossy white."

However, the president of the neighboring Golfview Hills Homeowners Association says that his community has some concerns. Ronald Hanson says that the former JMS Auto Service was a low-impact business to the neighborhood and did not use all five of its bays. Nearby Fuller's Auto Service is a similar size to the Sharabatee's site, but is located in a business district.

"If (Discount Tires) ramps up to the volume of Fuller's, that's going to have a huge impact on the residential area," Hanson said. "Is this an appropriate location in Hinsdale for an auto repair shop?"

Hanson went on to suggest that Hinsdale restrict hours of the Sharabatee's shop and limit the amount of employees and bays in use.

Hinsdale village trustee Neale Byrnes has told the Sharabatees that the board wants their business to succeed and do well. Trustees will revisit the issues surrounding this shop at their May 17 meeting.
