Feb. 28, 2020—Valvoline Instant Oil Change won approval on Wednesday to build a new location in Memphis, Tenn., reports the Daily Memphian.
According to the report, the Board of Adjustment voted 6-1 to approve a zoning exception to allow the quick lube chain to build a new location. The exception allows Valvoline to build 20 feet from the sidewalk, instead of following the 102-year old rule requiring a building to be at least 60 feet away.
With the vacant lot bordering a neighborhood, the Office of Planning & Development had received 111 emails or letter opposing the business, with three supporting it.
With the exception, Valvoline agreed to build a new, five-foot-wide sidewalk, as well as a 10-foot-wide streetscape with three shade trees. According to the report, the chain also agreed to turn the building sideways to hide vehicle bays, eliminate one of the two drives into the property, and build a wall on the building's west side to screen customers' cars and create a sense that the building fits in better with neighboring buildings.
