An Orland Hills man stepped away to get a bite to eat while he was having his oil changed and failed to get back before the place closed for the Memorial Day weekend, police said.
But locked out or not, 52-year-old Kenneth Majewski was not going to be deprived of his ride over the long weekend, police said, so he used an unspecified tool to raise the overhead bay doors and get to his car.
Unfortunately for Majewski, the entire episode was caught on surveillance video and he was arrested on charges of trespassing and theft for allegedly failing to pay for his oil change.
The manager of the Jiffy Lube on 159th Street reportedly went to the police about the Majewski matter on Tuesday.
The manager told the law a customer dropped off his car about 4 p.m. on Saturday. The customer left abruptly and without providing any contact information, according to police, saying only that he was getting something to eat.
The customer had not returned by closing time, police said, and workers locked the car inside the business to keep it safe over the weekend.
When the manager returned to open the Jiffy Lube three days later, the car was gone. Video surveillance showed the customer trying the locked front door and walking around the building before manipulating the overhead door to get it open, police said.
The man then reportedly drove his car out of the building. Before leaving, he was gracious enough to get out of his vehicle and pull the overhead door down behind him, police said.
The cops were able to track down Majewski and he surrendered at the station Wednesday, police said. He released from custody after he posted bond.
Majewski claimed he had planned to contact the Jiffy Lube so he could pay for his oil change, police said.
