Tatum: Rise Up the Ranks Requires Ambition, Initiative

If you're a tech with hopes of climbing the ranks in your shop, showing initiative and dedication will get your leadership team's attention.

When you started a job at a local quick lube center, you may have seen it simply as a paycheck. It was something easy to do, where you could learn a skill and move on to another job, like a dealership.

It is ok to say it aloud. We are known as an industry for entry-level automotive, hence why we have a history of rotating technicians. But some of you may be looking for more than just a job. You are looking to get your foot in the door and make a career out of what we do. Here are some things that you can do to stand out and put your best foot forward.

Be the model employee. This is the most obvious way to get noticed for your potential advancement. Be the one that the upper management relies on and points to as the way that things should be done. Always be on time, ready to go, and willing to do what you are asked to do. The one pitfall that some have is this attitude of “I don’t get paid to do that.”  This is the guy who is on his way out the door soon. Be the one that is first to step up to any challenge or opportunity. Take an “i’s my job” attitude.

Be the tech who solves problems, not the one who causes them. You can work well on your own, with little direction. You follow all the shop’s procedures, and when you see something that could be done better, you suggest it. When your upper leadership sees you as the guy they do not have to worry about making mistakes, they will start having you work with others to instill this work ethic.  Leadership is not about your personal success—it is about empowering others and creating successors. If you hold onto all the knowledge and do not let go, you will find yourself stuck. The professionals most likely to be promoted are those who contribute to the success of their team, and organization.

Focus on the future. Getting promoted is not only about your past performance, but also your future potential. Your management team wants to know that you can take on more responsibility. While past wins are great, what matters more is your ability to contribute to the shop in a long-term way. Instead of saying, "I’ve been working hard and deserve a raise or promotion," try saying, "I’ve been thinking about how I can be a better leader to the shop next year and would love to take on more responsibilities." This mindset demonstrates readiness for the next step.

There are many other ways that you can go about standing out. However, if you are trusted, vocal with positivity, and willing to do what you need to do to get the job done, leadership will notice. Many of them were in your position at one time, and they can see what it takes to make the jump to the next level.

So, think about your daily work habits. Are you working towards the next paycheck or are you looking to be the one signing the paychecks?
