Georgia County Launches Catalytic Converter Project

A county sheriff's office, a community college and local auto shops are teaming up in Habersham County to prevent catalytic converter theft.

Oct. 20, 2022—A county sheriff's office in Georgia is working with a local community college and local auto shops to prevent catalytic converter theft.

According to Now Habersham, the Habersham County Sheriff's Office is working with North Georgia Technical College as well as shops in the area to host a free event today at the college's Transportation Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will introduce Project CAT I.D. This project was developed in order to respond to the rise in catalytic converter thefts across the county of Habersham and the greater state of Georgia. The project tags catalytic converters by spraying them orange with a high-heat resistant paint. Additionally, the VIN of the vehicle is then etched into the converter.

The event will be free, and will act as a launching pad for this project. Vehicle information from this event will also be entered into a database managed by the sheriff's office. This service will also be made available through the local auto shops that are participating in this project.
