June 22, 2021—Through the first third of 2021, EVs saw a substantial surge in popularity.
According to a report from The Drive, EVs accounted for 2.3 percent of U.S. vehicle sales, up 0.7 percent from the average, from January to April 2021. Of the 133,509 EVs sold in that time period, two Tesla models accounted for 71 percent; the Model Y sold 53,102 units, and the Model 3 sold 35,468. The Chevy Bolt had the third-highest number of sales for that period, sitting at 13,611. Compared to the same time period last year, EV registrations are up 95 percent.
Overall, vehicle registrations went up by 36 percent during that time period, though that increase can be attributed to a recovery from sub-average numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
