Feb. 10, 2023–Mavis Tires and Brakes in Union City, Georgia, experienced a spill of oil and fluids from a storm drain outside the store, Fox 5 Atlanta reports.
The Union City Fire Department and a Georgia environmental agency said that there was no “immediate hazard to the public” after the oil spilled out into nearby Highway 138 on Wednesday.
An estimated “500 gallons worth of used motor oil and automotive fluids” had been dumped into the drain outside the store, according to the state’s Environmental Protection Division (EPD). It stretches “about a mile into the drain,” and is predicted to take “several days” to clear it out.
Local officials have said that a hazard mitigation team is currently at the scene to figure out the best method of removal.
