March 2, 2023–Nissan has recalled 712,458 Rogue and Rogue Sport SUVs in the United States due to an ignition key error causing the vehicle to potentially shut off, Car and Driver reports.

Nissan recently notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the recall, which was issued due to “jackknife” designed keys that collapse while the vehicle is moving. According to the recall report, the key’s “internal pivot that allows it to fold” can eventually wear out and result in “the key fob to unlock and rotate downward,” opening the potential for a “driver's hand to contact the key and accidentally shut off the vehicle.”

The recall affects 517,472 Rogues and 194,986 Rogue Sports, exclusively of the base S level. Other Rogues are not affected due to using what’s called an “Intelligent Key.”

Nissan has issued a “stop sale” order and advised owners to not attach anything to the key fob, and to “use the key in a non-folding position.”

Dealers and rental fleets are to be given instructions on “a way to insert a fastener into the key slot to keep the key from folding,” after which they will “insert a spacer into the key slot” of the keys to prevent collapse.
