Rain in Oceanside, California Increases Pothole Damages
Rainy weather in Oceanside, California has caused poor road conditions, specifically with rain filling in potholes and making them hard to avoid, 10 News reports.
Several drivers in the area as well as shops have reported terrible road conditions. One resident recounted one incident of his wife hitting a pothole on Highway 78.
“My wife’s car had a leaking tire. And so we took it to a tire shop, had the tire replaced. It continued to leak and it ended up being a cracked wheel from a pothole that she hit,” he stated.
In a statement to 10 News, Caltrans (the California Department of Transportation) said that they do not insure California residents that drive on their roads and that drivers instead must exercise caution and have adequate insurance already. Drivers who believe Caltrans is responsible for vehicle damages are encouraged to submit a claim, which will be reviewed and decided on by Caltrans.
Scott Grinstaff, the service manager for Conover Automotive Tires, Wheels & Service in Oceanside, said that his business has been seeing several victims of pothole damages come in. One driver on Highway 78 suffered his wheel breaking in half; another had two flat tires.
“I would say that we’ve had at least 8 cars come in today with tire problems from the weather and the rain and the roads,” Grinstaff said.
Grinstaff shared his own experiences driving in town and cited drivers not exercising enough caution in the wet weather.
“I’m out here driving on these roads too. And what I see is people being all crazy like it’s dry, the roads are dry, and they’re not. They’re wet. Be careful, slow down, make it home,” he advised.
