Grants Pass High School in Grants Pass, Oregon will be offering automotive classes to students, KDRV NewsWatch 12 reports.

The school is now able to reinstate its Career Technical Education program after gaining a new instructor, Travis Rappleyea, who will officially begin in August. 

His automotive classes will start in the fall of next year and will be taught for a full schedule of six class periods. The first semester will offer “three auto adulting and auto one classes.”

Auto adulting will teach students about basic maintenance such as “how to change windshield wipers, changing oil and monitoring tires.” Auto one will be more in-depth, teaching students “how the inner parts of the car operate, starting with the brake system.”

“We want to pride ourselves in providing lots of options for kids to learn, to move into their next stage in life,” stated Grants Pass High School Assistant Principal Michele Napier. “And so, being able to have skills in the automotive industry will allow some kids to go right out and get a job at some of our local service shops, which would be fantastic for some kids.”

Napier said that it may take “four or five years to really see the full scope of the program,” but they will “build as the years go on.”
