AAA has forecasted an increase in travel this Memorial Day weekend from the previous year.

AAA has forecasted an increase in travel this Memorial Day weekend from the previous year, according to a press release.

The organization has predicted that “42.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more” for Memorial Day weekend this year–which is defined as falling from Thursday, May 25 to Monday, May 29 by the AAA. This will be a 7% increase in travel from 2022.

Road trips, in particular, are expected to increase by 6% from last year, with 37.1 million drivers traveling for the holiday, equaling an increase of over 2 million people. Gas prices are also lower than they were at this time last year.

Car travel will still not meet pre-pandemic levels, however, being estimated to be around 500,000 travelers fewer. More people are utilizing other modes of transportation such as buses or trains to get to their destinations.

AAA Travel’s Senior Vice President Paula Twidale said that this Memorial Day weekend will be “the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since 2000, when AAA started tracking holiday travel.”
