A group of Renault vehicle owners in France are planning to file a criminal complaint against the manufacturer for selling cars with allegedly faulty engines, Car Scoops reports.

Owners of Renault vehicles, as well as certain Nissan and Dacia models, claim a recall should have been issued for the 1.2-liter engine, which was placed in 400,000 vehicles produced in Europe between 2012 and 2016. 

Though the automaker has said that the engines do consume too much oil and have affected around 133,050 French vehicles, the company has claimed it does not present a safety risk and has not issued a recall.

Christophe Leguevaques is the lawyer representing “at least several dozen people” that the complaint is being filed on behalf of at the Nanterre criminal court. He told Reuters that they have argued the incident is a display of “aggravated deceit, questionable business practices, fraud” and threatens the safety of other people.

The criminal complaint comes after unsatisfactory discussions between Renault and the plaintiffs, Leguevaques said. Prosecutors will decide if the complaint will warrant a formal investigation to be opened.
