General Motors has chosen the location for its newest battery cell plant in Indiana, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The new facility is part of a joint venture between GM and Samsung SDI. It will be constructed in northern Indiana on a 686-acre site in New Carlisle, which is roughly 15 miles west of South Bend. The plant will be used for producing nickel-rich battery cells for electric vehicles. 

Construction for the $3 billion plant will begin next year and is slated to open in 2026. 1,700 jobs are expected to be created with the plant’s opening. The St. Joseph County Council had offered tax abatements to GM to encourage them to build their plant there, with jobs at the new facility expected to pay $24 an hour.

“This joint venture and the 1,700 people there will help supply cells for millions of all-electric vehicles for customers across North America,” stated GM CEO Mary Barra. “The strong support of local and state leaders in Indiana and the combined resources and expertise of GM and Samsung SDI will help us move faster than we could on our own.”
