Ford has issued a recall for almost 140,000 vehicles due to a problem causing a sudden loss in oil pressure, Kelley Blue Book reports.
Included in the recall are 2016-2018 Ford Focuses and 2018-2022 Ford EcoSports that are equipped with a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
According to the automaker, the engine oil pump drive belt pretensioner is liable to crack or separate from the backing plate, or the belt itself may deteriorate. Both problems lead to the pump failing, and oil pressure abruptly falling.
This loss of pressure can cause engine damage or seizure, said Ford, leading to a loss of motive power as well as the mechanical vacuum pump that is needed to initiate power braking assist.
The problem presents a risk of crash, and Ford has reportedly received one instance of a crash resulting in two injuries that is potentially related to the issue. Almost 2,100 warranty claims related to the issue have also been received by Ford.
To resolve the problem, dealers are instructed to replace the vehicle’s drive belt pretensioner assembly and the belt.
