High School Students Learn Automotive Maintenance in ‘Skills Prep’ Class

Of all the topics covered in the course, one has stood out as a favorite among the students: automotive maintenance.

A high school elective that teaches students life skills has created some technicians in the making, reports Richland Source.

The Skills Prep elective at Clear Fork High School in Bellville, Ohio, was first developed four or five years ago by instructor Tami Vaughn. It teaches around 50 students each year how to handle various life events, such as doing taxes, using a credit card, or registering to vote. Students are also trained on how to write resumes and different career paths they may want to follow.

Though the Skills Prep student body is majority male this year, Vaughn said that on average she sees a fair mix of both girls and boys that display interest in the class. Of all the topics covered in the course, one has stood out as a favorite among the students: automotive maintenance.

Students are taught how to perform different tasks with a vehicle, including checking fluids or changing a tire. The kids’ interest has expanded beyond classroom activities, with one student inviting the rest of the class to help him figure out why his 2002 Chevy Cavalier’s check engine light was on.

As the Cavalier’s owner pulled out the dipstick to check the oil, the other students gathered around and questioned the status of his air filter. Noticing the presence of leaves and sticks in the air filter, Vaughn agreed with the students' concern.

When one of Vaughn’s students missed a day of class, she had another student go over what they missed. As he popped open the hood of his teacher’s car and demonstrated how to refill wiper fluid, it’s clear that the lessons Vaughn’s students are receiving are being absorbed–and could potentially lead to future opportunities in automotive work.
