Maryland Lawmakers Look to Implement Fees on Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
Lawmakers in Maryland are looking to implement additional fees on electric and hybrid vehicle drivers, reports WBAL-TV 11 Baltimore.
Senate Bill 1065 would create a $100 surcharge for electric and hybrid vehicle registration to compensate for the taxes those drivers won’t pay at the fuel pump.
Drivers who spoke with WBAL-TV agreed with the decision, saying that it makes things fair and will be important as more EVs are seen on roadways.
“We believe in fairness across the board, and so individuals who are using electronic vehicles aren't paying the gas tax,” said Senate Budget and Taxation Committee Chairman Guy Guzzone, D-District 13. “Of course, that's depleting our overall amount of revenues, which is troubling for all the services we want to provide for transportation.”
The state has presented other means of bolstering its transportation funds, such as the Maryland Toll Rate Reform Act of 2024, which would increase toll rates for out-of-state drivers, and House Bill 1280, which will take the sales and use tax already being paid at public charging stations and transition those funds to the Transportation Trust Fund.
