A free training program in Liberty, New York, will be training a group of individuals to become ASE-certified technicians, reports Mid Hudson News.

The Sullivan County Center for Workforce Development and Sullivan County BOCES will select 15 people for its automotive technician course, beginning April 9. Those applying for the course are required to be residents of Sullivan County and at least 18 years old.

With a rising demand for automotive technicians in Sullivan County, the program aims to not only provide more career opportunities, but to help local businesses with finding qualified help.

Students will be taught the basics of automotive work, including brakes, rotors, vehicle safety, power steering, ABS systems, and electronics, explained Jeffrey Molusky of BOCES. Classes will be held in the evening from BOCES’ Ferndale campus, where a classroom and training garage will be offered.

Students will receive instruction in automotive work from BOCES, while the Center for Workforce Development will come in to speak about other vital professional skills. The course will culminate with students receiving Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.

“We teach the hard skills–the cutting, the hammering, the measuring. They came in and taught the soft skills–resumes, interview, applications,” said BOCES Superintendent Robert Dufour. “They brought in business people from the county to sit down and meet with the students with the goal of having jobs waiting for them on the back end when they completed the program.”
