The new Take 5 in McKinney would be within a half-mile of three other automotive shops, leading to some debate over approving the plans.

Plans for a Take 5 Oil Change location in McKinney, Texas, have received approval following some debate from city officials, Community Impact reports.

The new location, which does not yet have an opening date set, will be located in west McKinney. It will sit on an approximately 1-acre lot at the southwest corner of Eldorado Parkway and Stonebridge Drive, nearby an H-E-B store.

At an April 16 McKinney City Council meeting, a specific use permit was approved for the business in a 4-3 vote. As explained by Director of Planning Jennifer Arnold, the new Take 5 would be within a half-mile of three other automotive shops, leading to the planning staff not recommending approval of the project.

City Council member Geré Feltus–who was one of the ‘against’ votes on April 16–affirmed this, arguing that there are at least 10 businesses offering oil changes within a three-mile radius of the proposed Take 5. Feltus feared too many similar businesses would be occupying one area.

The proposed Take 5 is planned to have an elevated exterior facade that will look different from most Take 5 stores. Council member Patrick Cloutier represents the district the proposed store will be in, and was understanding of his colleagues’ denials of the plans–however, he came out in support, citing the aesthetic appeal of the future business.

“With the screening they’re doing, it’ll be probably the best-looking oil change place in McKinney,” Cloutier remarked.
