American Petroleum Institute Licenses Over 1,800 ILSAC GF-7 Engine Oils

The American Petroleum Institute has licensed over 1,800 GF-7 motor oil products, including GF-7A and GF-7B categories.

The American Petroleum Institute has licensed over 1,800 ILSAC GF-7 specification motor oil products since its first license on March 31, 2025, as shared in a recent press release.

Of the over 1,800 GF-7 products licensed, they include more than 1,750 under GF-7A and an additional 125 under GF-7B. Additionally, the API Service Category SQ now has more than 2,500 licensed products, as API continues to accept licensing applications for all categories.

The ILSAC GF-7A and GF-7B categories differentiate between performance levels or oil grades for specific engine needs. Licensed oils that meet the GF-7A standard may be used where oils meeting GF-6A or earlier gasoline engine oil standards have been recommended. Oils that meet the ILSAC GF-7B standard may be used where oils that meet the GF-6B standards for SAE 0W-16 oils have been recommended.

API Service Category SQ includes ultra-low-viscosity grades, such as SAE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12, which are becoming increasingly important, as they can offer lower friction and better fuel economy in vehicles where these viscosity grades are being recommended by global automakers.
