City officials have paved the way for a new Take 5 Oil Change in Crystal River, Florida, reports Citrus County Chronicle.

The proposed site would be taking the place of a former church at the corner of State Road 44 and Northeast Sixth Avenue, with it having been zoned as religious/benevolent since May 1957. The City Council approved a land use and zoning change that will allow for commercial use of the property.

“It’s like maybe the most commercial area that there is,” said Mayor Joe Meek. “I’m surprised it stayed in its previous zoning for so long.”

Currently, the site has a Wawa gas station to the north, CVS pharmacy to the south across State Road 44, Dunkin’ Donuts across Northeast Sixth Avenue to the east, and Big Dan’s Car Wash to the west.

Potential traffic impacts were discussed among the City Council due to the property’s existing curb cut on Northeast Sixth Avenue and shared access with neighboring Big Dan’s Car Wash.

“... Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks, they look like they’re having a competition with traffic … Especially on North Sixth Avenue, right in there, we’ve got a lot going on,” said Councilwoman Gabrielle Satchell.

Ultimately the Council voted 4-1 to approve both the Future Land Use Map Amendment and the zoning map change last Monday, with Satchell being the sole dissenting vote.
