Mitsubishi Expands Recall for Outlander SUVs Over Liftgate Gas Spring Corrosion
Mitsubishi has expanded a previous recall of its Outlander SUVs over an issue that could cause the vehicle’s liftgate to fail, as shared recently by Autoblog.
Included in the recall are the 2014-2020 Outlander and 2018-2022 Outlander PHEV. The issue lies with the liftgate gas spring cylinders being prone to corrosion, caused by saltwater penetration building under the dust cap. Vehicles with both manual liftgate systems and electric motors are impacted.
Originally, the company had not received any reports of the issue in the U.S., prompting a recall only in states with high road salt usage. However, an investigation showed the issue happening outside that region too.
The left and right gas springs, which use a heat-shrink resin tube, will be by Mitsubishi to resolve the problem. The new components will have an anti-corrosion coating. Due to Mitsubishi not producing its vehicles in North America anymore, it will take time to get new components for the recall repair. Dealers will be notified on June 3, while vehicle owners will begin receiving notices June 17.
