General Motors Issues Brake Fluid Recall Over Sediment and Brake Performance Risks

The sediment in the ACDelco brake fluid, caused by additives, could compromise brake function. Notifications are being sent to dealers and customers, with GM providing reimbursement for affected stock.

General Motors has issued a recall of brake fluid, according to a report from USA Today.

Involved in the recall are over 40,000 units of ACDelco GMW DOT 3 Brake Fluid, limited to lot number 01977 091222. The batch was manufactured in 2022. Sold as replacement brake and clutch fluid, the product was distributed in the United States by dealers and direct purchasers tied to General Motors and ACDelco supply channels.

After third-party compliance testing in June 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration informed GM in August 2025 that visible sediment was found in some containers of the brake fluid. NHTSA carried out more testing this past March on unopened samples from the same lot, and again found visible sediment.

GM has said the sediment is caused by two additives in the brake fluid, not outside contaminants. NHTSA has added that the recalled brake fluid could cause brake performance issues.

Dealers have begun receiving notices as of May 6, while other direct purchasers will be notified beginning June 8. GM will reimburse dealers and direct purchasers for remaining stock of recalled brake fluid. Those who think they may have purchased recalled fluid are instructed to verify their lot number and to follow guidance from retailers or distributors.
