German car manufacturer RUF Automobile and Motul, French high-performance lubricants manufacturer, recently announced RUF x Motul Heritage Motor Oil 20W-50: a mineral multigrade lubricant fulfilling RUF requirements, and developed in close technical collaboration for classic air-cooled engines from the 1950s to the 1970s.

As shared in a press release, RUF and Motul are launching Heritage Motor Oil 20W-50 as a dedicated co-branded solution for owners and workshops maintaining classic air-cooled cars. The product combines Motul’s lubricant formulation expertise with RUF’s direct engineering knowledge of air-cooled engines.

Heritage Motor Oil 20W-50 is a mineral multigrade lubricant formulated for naturally aspirated, turbocharged, or supercharged engines, and can be used with both carburetor and fuel-injection systems. Designed for year-round use, it features a medium detergency level compatible with elastomer gaskets, oil-consumption control, and oil-film resistance. These properties help protect engines during cold starts and after extended periods of storage, two important considerations for classic vehicles that may be driven seasonally or maintained as collectibles.

RUF has seen more cars it worked on in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s returning to its workshop for restorations, repairs, and upgrades, reinforcing the need for a lubricant designed around the operating realities of these air-cooled engines rather than a one-size-fits-all modern formulation.

RUF and Motul’s collaboration began in 2020, when Motul became RUF’s official lubricant partner. Since then, Motul has been closely involved in RUF’s engine development and testing programs, giving engineers from both companies two-way access to important data used in the creation of performance lubricants and engines. Models such as the SCR, CTR Anniversary, RODEO, EHRA, and air-cooled TRIBUTE have benefited from Motul’s engineering input. This established technical relationship provided the foundation for the two companies to design a dedicated motor oil for classic air-cooled cars.
