Aug. 9, 2019—While signing a deal to sell more U.S. beef to Europe, President Donald Trump said jokingly that his administration was working on a 25-percent tariff on German luxury cars coming to America, reports Reuters.
While that comment wasn't taken seriously, Trump did go on to say that auto tariffs are "never off the table" with Europe. The United States is involved in talks with the European Union to reform the World Trade Organization. Trump said that he would put tariffs in place if he doesn't get what he wants, Reuters reported.
European leaders dismissed the tariff threats but called for serious negotiations on trade.
