Survey: Alternatives to Combustion Engines to be 65 Percent of Market by 2030

Fully electric vehicles still expected to have low market share compared to hybrid models.

Aug. 8, 2019—Respondents to the 2019 Automotive Futures Powertrain Survey say that hybrid models will outpace traditional spark-combustion powertrains by 2030.

Wards Auto reported the survey results, which are part of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. The figures show that experts predict that traditional combustion power plants will hold 55 percent of the market share in 2025.

But by 2030, spark-ignition engines will be just 35 percent of the market, compared to 43 percent for hybrid designs, according to the survey. Other alternative options include advanced diesel (4 percent), electric (13 percent), extended range (4 percent) and fuel cell (2 percent) by 2030.

The survey respondents come from automakers and suppliers, as well as non-automotive industry observers, according to Wards.

The article notes that confidence in market share for diesel powertrains has dropped significantly in the wake of diesel scandals like that of Volkswagen.
